#1: I like Cherry Jones as the new president. She’s no President Palmer (original flavor), but I think I will enjoy her character and the actress as the series moves along.
#2: I’m hoping it will be better tonight. I thought it was kind of boring, especially after the ep started with such a jolt. (The car crash made me jump.) But after that well-done action piece, it was all very tame and not that interesting. That leads me to…
#3: Some of the dialogue was just awful and way too exposition-y. From the very awkwardly scripted description of how Tony is still alive (“Well, you were with him and then they rolled his body away and then you were in China!”) to the repeated debates between the pretty FBI lady and Jack over the merits of following the law versus the results of torture. The third time it came up, I was ready to fast forward.
#4: CTU might be gone, but the FBI headquarters in DC was very reminiscent of CTU Los Angeles. A snarky analyst…check! (Janeane Garofolo, I usually like you, but your “anxiety” at a possible terrorist attack was a classic example of terrible 24 supporting character acting.) Another analyst who always seems annoyed by/attracted to the snarky one…check! Rhys Coiro, I liked you as Billy Walsh/Wally Balls, but if the first two hours are any indication, I think I’ll be done with you by the end of the next two. A by-the-book boss who doesn’t like Jack…check!
Kiefer is good as always, and I probably should reserve judgment until after tonight’s two hours, but I was very underwhelmed and disappointed by last night’s premiere. I had hope after the ‘Redemption’ TV movie (which was much better than I thought it would be), but now I’m losing hope again and I feel like I felt after the first six hours or so of season six.
