Friday Night Lights:
Another solid hour mostly spent on expanding on storylines set up in the premiere.
Loved the Matt & Julie scenes – I’m glad that Aimee Teegarden and Zach Gilford are working together again – one of the many things I have missed since season one.
Speaking of Gilford, he did some great non-verbal work in this episode. He can effortlessly project so many emotions with his eyes and body language. (Matt is not much of a talker to begin with, anyway.)
Coach and Tami (unsurprisingly) had some awesome scenes tonight: First, his reaction to the online article (“I’ll get more wine.”), then when they are in bed and she asks him what he thinks about the Jumbotron, you can see the relief in his eyes when the baby starts crying and he practically jumps out of bed.
I got all teary-eyed at the end when Coach went to talk to Smash.
Some of standout quotes:
- The suggested campaign slogans: “A vote for Tyra is a vote for hotness.” and “Vote for Tyra and get action.”
- Billy (to Tim after finding out about the letter from college): “You and me – we’re going places.” (It’s all in the delivery.)
- “It’s me, Matt…your son.” (Poor Matt.)
- “It means I get to take care of old people.” (Funny and sad at the same time – Poor Matt.)
- I like the Tim/Tyra dynamic, especially in this exchange: Tyra: “Soon as they’re done humpin’, I’ll be out of your hair.” Tim: ”That shouldn’t take long.”
Battlestar Galactica:
Not as powerful as the premiere, but a decent episode – almost a palate cleanser to get us away from Earth and into the fleet again.
The scene with Tigh and Six with Doc Cottle rang a bit false for me – especially Tigh’s reaction. (And I love Michael Hogan, so this is blasphemous.) I know time has passed, so maybe Tigh has had time to sit with the knowledge of Ellen and it helps him accept his Cylon-ness better, but he was like a giddy twenty-something celebrating his first child.
Well, at least they explained why Nicky isn’t special. That makes sense, because I think Hera has an important role to play and I’d rather her stay unique.
When Gaeta started with his lip, I was thinking that he’s really starting to get ballsy and I wasn’t really sure where it was all suddenly coming from, and then I was reminded that the webisodes take place right before the season begins, so that definitely makes his actions more palatable.
The scene between Gaeta and Starbuck was especially awesome. (Half kicks!)
When Adama was talking about Zarek, it sounded like he was saying “Zurich.”
And it’s always good to see Zarek, even if he is up to no good. However, his speech to the Quorum was logical and hard to argue with, especially if you’re a regular member of the fleet (i.e. not an Adama or Roslin.)
I’m not sure if I agree with Roslin’s decisions in the ep, but it was nice to see her happy and relaxed for once. And Mary McDonnell is awesome whatever Roslin does.
I do wish James Callis had more to do. I miss the old Baltar. He’s a good rabble-rouser, but I hope there’s more in store for him in weeks to come.
